Abstract This paper presents an analysis of lightning induced over-voltage effect on medium voltage (22.9 kV-y) and low voltage (380/220 V) network regarding to different values of grounding resistance of lightning arrestor in terms of flashover rate. The study is focused on an indirect lightning effect considering a BIL of distribution line. Monte Carlo method is adopted to generate the total number of lightning events. The attractive radius model is used to determine direct or indirect lightning among the total lightning events and hence to evaluate the flashover rate. The shield effect is also analyzed for a case of urban area where buildings surround distribution lines
